The Crows Nest Festival celebrated its 30th year in October 2020. Though the festivities did not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the spirit of celebration was still felt at the ‘Back to the Nest’ event held last 17-18 October. This pandemic may have put our normal life on a halt – that celebrations like this have been missed – but fret not, you can still enjoy the best of Crows Nest, like their cafes that are here to stay, and we are happy to share some of the best …
Kürtősh
Its unique name comes from Kürtőskalács, a common Hungarian pastry known as the chimney cake. With soft inner walls, this cylindrical yeast pastry has caramelised crispy flaky outside, and is typically sold as street snacks from carts throughout Hungary. Kürtősh serves the best tasting coffee in the area (it’s by Mecca), and offers huge selection of cakes that are priced by weight! Kürtősh is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., so you can get not only your afternoon tea fix here, but also your after dinner (dessert) fix. Double Cross Espresso Bar
Dubbed as one of cafes in Crows Nest that serve the best breakfast, Double Cross Espresso Bar is open to serve as early as 7:00am. It has a creative menu that is Japanese fusion with a twist. Their mentaiko pasta with marinated fish roe is a must try while their chicken karaage benedict (hello, 63-degree eggs) is the crowd favourite. Turka
This cafe offers traditional Turkish dishes with an Australian twist from breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the aim of bringing this country’s exotic tastes to Sydney diners. The quality of their food, service and ambience impresses Crows Nest diners that’s why Turka made it as a Restaurant & Catering 2020 finalist. Oh goodness, their best dish is far too many to mention! Cavalier 2.0
A copper-filled underground bunker has been air-lifted into a sunny shopfront, that’s Cavalier. The high level of care taken with the food has won Cavalier a loyal following since it opened in late 2015. fine-dining-level fare in an unassuming location: tucked in a little back alley just behind the pacific highway. Cavalier 2.0 is open Wednesday-Saturday 8.30am-2pm and while it’s actually in nearby St Leonards but close enough when on a caffeine charge. Cavalier’s large plates are elaborate, elegant constructions such as a creamy, eggless, trifle-topped french toast dish that looks like a pixie’s garden, inspired by an old english-peasant dessert with custard, chopped banana, whipped cream and biscuits. “Food & friends, and not necessarily in that order,” is the Cavalier catch-cry.

Bean Drinking Cafe
An award winning specialty coffee cafe with delicious and fresh food, taste one of the best coffees and some of the most delicious healthy food in Sydney. Their catch-cry “my favourite cafe, the only place to be”. Enjoy Prosciutto and Avocado, Mushroom bruschetta, half price coffee with any breakfast purchased between 7-9am between Monday to Friday, Honey Glazed Salmon, Porridge and other lustrous creations. And yet even so, Bean Drinking Cafe is so VERY much about the coffee! There are helpful diagrams to demystify pour-over filters, sketches of coffee plant growth stages, and you can’t miss the puffing of the mighty Slayer espresso-machine – the first ever bought into NSW.

Hunter, Gemma and MT have this to say about Fix Cafe: Always love stopping by Fix for a takeaway and chat with Oliver. The coffee & brekkie wrap deal for $9.5 is really good as well – chorizo is always my go-to. Great coffee from double roasters, we enjoyed some delicious Turkish toast and a very tasty and wonderfully fresh, BLAT. Fix Cafe’s seats outside were very comfortable and the staff friendly. They also had a good covid safe plan. Small, cozy & lovely cafe! Love the soup of the day- so fresh & home made which is hard to find these days! Love the coffee always …
